Santana and Becky G Join Forces for “Mi Gran Amor”, A Track Celebrating Latino Immigrants’ Resilence
Global rock icon Carlos Santana and global superstar Becky G join forces on “Mi Gran Amor,” a track that reflects the lives of millions of Latino immigrants in the United States. The single is available now on all digital platforms via Sony Music Latin.
Written by 29-time Latin GRAMMY® winner Edgar Barrera, alongside Spreadlof, CASTA, Daniel Rondón, Carlos Santana and Becky G, the track stands out for its narrative quality, portraying the reality of the more than 68 million Latinos living in the United States, according to the Pew Research Center.
The single opens with a powerful verse that sets the tone from the very start: “un día normal en los Estados Unidos” (“a normal day in the United States”).
With the precision of a social and cultural anthropologist, Becky G becomes the powerful narrator of stories that are the lived reality of thousands of Latinos in the United States.
Becky G gives voice to this immigrant woman who chronicles the daily life of millions of people from across Latin America who come to the United States in search of the coveted American dream: “Cuatro de la mañana, sale a la calle antes que el sol. En su país era abogado, aquí anda en chinga en la construcción” (“Four in the morning, she heads out before the sun. Back home, he was a lawyer, grinding away in construction”).
The emotional peak arrives in the chorus, capturing one of migration’s harshest realities: “esa mañana era una más, un día normal, no se imaginaba que ya no iba a volver, que en el trabajo iba a caer la migra, mi gran amor se fue por culpa de la migra, a mi gran amor lo han confundido con un bandido, yo no he dormido, se volvió una pesadilla buscar el sueño en los Estados Unidos” (“that morning was just another, a normal day, she never imagined he wouldn’t come back, that immigration would raid his workplace, my great love was taken because of immigration, my great love has been mistaken for a criminal, I haven’t slept, searching for the American dream turned into a nightmare”).
Despite these challenges, Santana and Becky G highlight the resilience of the Latino immigrant and the fundamental role of the Hispanic community in the country’s cultural fabric: “las estrellas de su bandera las cosimos nosotros” (“we were the ones who sewed the stars on their flag”).
The production by Edgar Barrera and Carlos Santana shines throughout, with the legendary artist’s unmistakable guitar serving as the backbone that ties the entire story together. The track, positioned as a pop/rock anthem, summons the sounds of all of Latin America in 3 minutes and 38 seconds, incorporating the Santana Band, who bring Latin flavor through timbales, congas, güiro, and maracas, which give the genre its vitality and tropical flair.
This is the third single Santana has released in this new musical chapter, continuing a series of collaborations with Mexican stars — including Grupo Frontera on “Me Retiro” and Carín León on “Velas” — both tracks also led by Edgar Barrera in composition and production.
